this article, we as poets are raking it in, at almost $4,000 above average. So, the question is, how many of you are making money--like big money--off your poetry. If you are, what secrets do you have to impart. If you're not, why do you think that is?

Wow, that's bizarre. I don't have any idea where they get these figures. Of course, they probably didn't count all the artists who make an amount of money too small to pay taxes on...
the secret is doing something you love and strive to excel at so that you get paid handsomely. when you are happy, feel...productive and appreciated you will naturally write more and write better. if you hate your job you will not likely have the passion, time or temperment to write well or plenty.
The article states that it's from a survey of "artistic occupations" including architects, designers, etc. These are folk with artistic "day jobs." Most of us are not in those commercial categories.
A load of happy horseshit - poets in America are college professors - they make their money from teaching, not selling poetry.
Agreed, I've written poetry for over forty years. It was never my career or related to my college degrees, but it is a part of my art. It is who I am.
