Haiku Hikes and Ekphrastacy Events in Cleveland Heights

From our friends at Heights Arts. The first Haiku Hike is this Saturday, August 28th, at Cain Park.

HAIKU HIKES

This Saturday, join Cleveland Heights Poet Laureate Ray McNiece on a seasonal morning ginkgo (haiku walk), through Cain Park learning and creating poetry according to centuries-old traditions. These customs cultivate a seasonal awareness that improves one’s powers of poetic and natural observation.

Hikes will begin with a formal introduction to haiku, continue with 4 stops along the way, then conclude with a final sharing. Sign up for one session or all four seasons in a series we're offering in celebration of Cleveland Heights' centennial anniversary.

Find out more about how to register for a single hike or the full series, HERE

EKPHRASTACY EVENTS

Each exhibition at Heights arts showcases outstanding visual art which we then celebrate through poetry during the run of that show. Perhaps you've attended one of these readings and wondered how the poets all train to be such impressive performers. With Ray's guidance, selected applicants are provided a structured approach to choosing visual art that speaks to them, developing their poetic response, and then presenting their interpretations at one of our most beloved programs. If you're a literary enthusiast, we encourage you to check out our open call for poets, HERE

Ohio Haiku Anthology Call for Submissions

The Ohio Haiku Anthology is an anthology celebrating contemporary English Language Haiku haiku written by Ohio poets, past and present.

The closing date for entries is March 31, 2019. Poets selected will be announced by June 30, 2019.

Poets selected for the anthology will be paid one copy of the anthology.

Your submission should comprise of 5-10 haiku and senryu. We are specifically looking for poems that follow the contemporary English Language Haiku format as described by The Haiku Society of America.  (http://www.hsa-haiku.org/archives/HSA_Definitions_2004.html)  While we will not reject poems that are 5-7-5 outright, they must follow the other HSA guidelines for haiku.
We are primarily looking for poems that have been previously published by leading haiku journals and presses. After each poem, please indicate the publication name and date. While we will not reject unpublished poems outright, the emphasis for this anthology is on previously published work.

Your submission should be in English and must be entirely your own work. You must have reprint rights for your poems. By submitting your poems, you are agreeing that you have reprint rights.
Your name and e-mail address should appear on the top of your submission. A cover sheet should include your name, address, email address, and your relationship to Ohio. Lunar and Planetary Haiku

photo of the moon by Geoffrey Landis

The Economist has an article about science haiku at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference:
including some examples:

Thermal Moonquakes: Implications for Surface Properties
Sunrise and sunset
Cracking, creaking, and rumbling
The Moon never rests.
                          --Renee Weber

I do have to admit I've probably written more than my share of haiku and pseudo-haiku, including more than a few science haiku.  If you like science haiku, though, you owe it to yourself to check out Mary Soon Lee's "Elemental Haiku," in the journal Science: one haiku for each element. And the sciku project page, the latest scientific and mathematical discoveries, thoughts and ideas... in the form of haiku.
